To get that bright red color on the candy shell, Mars (the parent company) uses an additive called Carmine. On European labels, this is often listed as E120 or Cochineal Extract.

What is Carmine? It is a red food dye made by boiling and crushing pregnant female beetles.

Because it is an insect derivative, recognized Islamic authorities like HMC UK classify Carmine as strictly Haram. Therefore, standard M&M’s sold in the UK and Europe are not Halal.

Trap 2: The USA Recipe (Hidden Rennet) 🇺🇸

If you buy M&M’s in the United States, you avoid the bug problem.

The FDA heavily regulates artificial colors . American M&M’s use synthetic, petroleum-based dyes like Red 40. While artificial colors are unhealthy, they are completely plant-based and Halal.

But there is a catch.

American M&M’s contain Whey Powder. Whey is the liquid leftover from making cheese. To make that cheese, factories use an enzyme called rennet.

In the US, commercial rennet is often extracted from the stomachs of slaughtered calves. If the calf was not slaughtered according to Islamic Zabiha rules, the rennet is Haram. Because Mars does not use certified Halal whey, American M&M’s remain Mushbooh (doubtful).

Peanut, Crispy, or Chocolate: Does It Matter?
